Standardized Volunteer Opinion Survey - FAQs

Q. Why should I participate in the survey?

When you participate in this survey, you will:

  • Receive an evaluation of your volunteer program and organization from the point of view of volunteers.
  • Quickly discover problem areas within your program resulting in improvement initiatives.
  • Improve the service your department provides to volunteers, your clients, your organization.
  • Identify strengths to champion within your their program.
  • Respond more quickly to changing volunteer interests and needs in the key areas known to be important to volunteers.
  • Increase your professional image within your organization.
  • Compare your results to that of other health care institutions in Ontario through comparisons to the average of all participating organizations and the high performing organization for each item measured.
  • Increase the "professionalism" of the profession of volunteer management and engagement.

Q. How frequently will the survey be conducted?

The survey is offered every two years; however we require a minimum number of healthcare institutions in order to conduct the survey.

Q. What is the minimum number of institutions required in order for this year's survey to proceed?

We require a minimum of 10 institutions for the survey to proceed.

Q. Is there a maximum number of institutions for survey?

No, at this time there is no maximum.

Q. How long will the survey run?

The survey will run for a period of approximately 3-4 weeks depending on our response rates. An extension may be applied if we need to collect more responses for the data to be valid.

Q. Will data be available to participating organizations?

The report delivery date is estimated to be released 3 months after the survey has closed. The number of participants and time required by the consultant for analysis will impact exact timelines.

Q. Who is the survey data shared with?

Individual organization results and the final report are shared with participating organizations only, and is not to be shared publicly as per our guidelines. Group average results may be reported more widely. Participating organizations are required to sign and abide by the Confidentiality Guidelines and Hard Copy Data Entry Checklist & Agreement.

Q. What does the final report look like?

The final report encompasses an introduction to the survey, overall summary of results with key highlights from the survey. Individual organization results, as well as group averages are presented with high performers being identified for each topic/dimension. Each organization will receive a copy of the main report, presentation report and their own raw data in MS Excel format. A comparison template chart is provided which can be used to refine your individual data for presenting within your own organization. Please see sample survey questions and the sample report.


Q. What if our hospital/healthcare institution has multiple sites?

For organizations with multiple sites, an additional multi-site report is provided. Preparation of a multi-site report is determined based on the information provided by each organization at the time of survey registration (ex. number of sites, size of institution, number of volunteers, etc.).


Q. What if I would like to receive more detail than the report provides?

Please contact us at pavro@pavro.on.ca with any additional questions about your report and we can investigate whether we can accommodate your request.


Q. What are my expenses, outside of the $300 +HST minimum up to $1,750 +HST maximum fee?

Additional costs may include printing costs for conducting the survey and communicating the opportunity to your volunteers (ex.hard-copy survey distribution, flyers, letters, etc.).


Q. If I'm not a member of PAVRO, can my organization still participate in the survey?

Yes, all healthcare institutions are invited to participate. Those with PAVRO members on staff will have the $175 administration fee waived.


Q. Is the survey only for hospital/healthcare institutions with volunteer programs?

At this time, the survey is tailored to volunteers in an on-site healthcare setting, such as: acute care hospitals, complex care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, mental health hospitals, long term care and hospices. This allows us to benchmark similar types of volunteer programs.


Q. Is PAVRO interested in expanding this survey to other nonprofits/organizations?
