Administrators and Managers of volunteers and volunteer programs work in fast paced environments where we manage multiple tasks, responsibilities and challenges. Although there are many resources available to us, connecting with colleagues within our profession is invaluable.

Topic: Developing a framework of engagement

Join an informal conversation with colleagues to share experiences, lessons learned, and practical approaches to engaging volunteers and unpaid supporters. We’ll discuss how organizations have developed volunteer engagement policies, philosophies or statements of engagement, what has worked well (and what hasn’t), and how teams create a shared understanding of volunteer involvement across their organization. This is an opportunity to exchange ideas, challenges, and best practices for ensuring a consistent approach to volunteer engagement and avoiding siloed or ad hoc practices.

Volunteers in Transition: Supporting Volunteers Through Change with Compassion and Consistency with Brianna Cronin, CVA

Description:

Volunteers experience life changes that can impact their ability to serve safely and effectively, from health concerns and aging to family responsibilities and other personal circumstances. How can volunteer engagement professionals navigate these situations while protecting volunteers, supporting staff, and maintaining positive relationships?

This session explores a structured volunteer transition planning process that helps organizations respond thoughtfully and consistently when volunteer roles need to change. Through real-world examples, participants will learn strategies for documentation, communication, role modifications, alternative placements, and volunteer retirement pathways. Attendees will leave with practical tools to create policies and processes that support both organizational needs and volunteer well-being.

Key Learning Outcomes:

Create or strengthen organizational policies that normalize volunteer transitions and support volunteer well-being across all stages of service.

Apply documentation and information-gathering practices to support consistent, equitable, and defensible decision-making.

Describe the key stages of a structured volunteer transition process, from initial concern through role modification, reassignment, or retirement.

Distinguish the responsibilities of volunteer engagement professionals and operational/supervising staff throughout the transition process.

Presenter Bio: Brianna Cronin, CVA, has worked in volunteer engagement since 2012 and currently serves as Volunteer Coordinator at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance (DZCA), where she has spent the past four years strengthening the volunteer program while, of course, falling in love with the animals. Throughout her career, Brianna has led volunteer engagement efforts across a variety of sectors, including higher education, food security, affordable housing, and local government. She enjoys combining the logistical and relationship-building aspects of volunteer engagement and is especially energized by creating new systems and structures that help volunteer programs thrive.
